Anchor of emperor Karel V
When emperor Karel V visited Sas van Gent, he left his anchor behind. You can see this anchor next to the roundabout at the Westkade. The anchor has been made of blotter iron in the 16th century.

Betekop
Every year Sas van Gent is renamed during carnival to Betekoppenstad. To honour this there is a statue of the Betekop on the Westkade

Bolwerk Generaliteit
The former Bolwerk Generaliteit is known by the inhabitants of Sas van Gent as the Molenberg (Mill Mount). Under the Bolwerk there are hallways, which were mainly used for supply of ammunition.
The hallways have been restored and can be visited when you make an appointment. More information at the VVV (tourist office).

Canada monument
19 September 1944 Sas van Gent has been freed by the Argyll and Sutherlands Highlanders, the Algonquin regiment, the Canadian Grenadiers Guards and the Royal Canadian Artillery.
There is a monument on the Keizer Karelplein to remember these heroes, but also the warriors and citizens, who died in the second world war.

De Hertog van Marlborough
Halfway the 17th century there was a stately house built at the Oostkade in Sas van Gent.. In the wide 350 year old existence of the house, it changed owner and function a lot of times. The house was subdivided in serveral houses; was used as an office and became later an Executive Board house. Nowadays De Hertog van Marlborough (translated: the duke of Marlborough) is the office of architectural firm Verplancke + Goethals.

Doctor van Loy
Across the Molenberg (mill mount) you can find the doctor van Loy park. In the park there is a monument to remember doctor van Loy. This doctor was serving in the resistance in the second world war.

Getij-water-korenmolen
The getij-water-korenmolen (tide-water-cornmill) was built in 1696 in the blockhouse. In times of war, it used ebb and flood to grind grain. The wind mills were then too vulnerable. The water corn mill was covert with ground and was considered as ' bomvfree'.A considerable part of the complex still exists. You can visit the complex for free.

Border pile Sas van Gent / Assenede
In 1830, Belgium has become independent from the Netherlands. On the 5th of November 1842 the kingdoms Belgium and the Netherlands corresponded a border pile No. 312 on the border between Assenede (Belgium) and Sas van Gent (the Netherlands)..

Austrian border pile Keizer Karelplein
Since 2002 there is an Austrian border pile standing on the Keizer Karelplein from 1770. the restored border pile has indicated the extreme border of the rich of emperor Maximiliaan. Until 1930 the pile stood in a garden of a house on the Keizer Karelplein. Some years ago pieces of the pile were retrieved in storage of the city. The upper piece of the border pile could be saved. They put it on a new piece of concrete.
You still can see the characteristics of the land-mark and the weapons of the Netherlands and Austria. The double eagle of Austria has considerably worn down the previous centuries, but the lion with sword and seven arrows to symbolise the seven provinces is still clearly recognizable.

Canal bridge
In in 1967/1968 the bridge at Sas van Gent was replaced by a large turn bridge after the broadening of the canal Ghent-Terneuzen. Shippers can contact the bridge via mariphone channel 11.
The bridge is regularly open mainly for large sea ships. Also the bridge is famous of the festival "Rock/dance around the bridge", which is held every year at the foot of the bridge.

Canal island
The walking promenade on the canal island is a particular place to spot near passing ships on the canal of Ghent to Terneuzen. When you are walking on the promenade you come along the more than 100 years old lock that has been restored. You go back in time of the industrial revolution......

Cathead
The cat head has been bricked in in the Kattengat (cat hole), the deadend street of the Veerstraat (at the Oostkade). A century agon Pier de Duvel (Pier the Devil) lived in this street. In Sas van Gent he was familiar as the cat smacker.

Church Catholic
This church was built in 1892, and has a lovely interiour. The building has been designed by Jos Cuypers, the son of Pierre Cuypers. He is well-known for building many churches in neo-Gothic style.
Every Sunday is there a church service at 11.00. Every four weeks there is an Eucharist celebration.

Church Reformed
The construction of this church demanded a period which lasted of 1648 to 1658. in 1747, the church was put on fire by the French. Between 1750 and 1754 the church was destructed. In 1896, the church was put on fire again as a result of lightning. In 1897, the present church was built. The reformed church in Sas van Gent closed some years ago.

Molen(berg) / Mill(mount)

Mozaiek weapon Sas van Gent
Nowadays Sas van Gent is part of the municipality of Terneuzen. Before the 1th of January 2003 a municipality Sas van Gent existed. This municipality had its own weapon. You can find this weapon in mozaiek at the entrance of the Bolwerk Generaliteit.

Bascule bridge
From 1919 up to 1986 there where two sugar factories in Sas van Gent. Suikerunie and CSM. The logo on the bascule bridge that connects the West - with the Oostkade, still reminds to the presence of the CSM factory.

Old convent
The high white building across the Keizer Karelplein is familiar as the old convent. The building has been used by the sisters of Franciscanessen.
Originally the convent had two adresses. The named them "De Drij Passagiers" and "Den Reijsende Man". You can find the names on the convent.

Sas van Gent monument
On the 450th anniversary of Sas van Gent a monument was placed on the Oostkade, to remember the decision of emperor Karel V to dig the Sasse vaart (canal).

The schepentrekker is the symbol of an old profession of Sas van gent, when the settlement especially served as a ' lock ' of Ghent.

Sugar monument
As a reminder to the sugar factory of the Suikerunie (Sugar Union), a monument is donated to the former municipality Sas van Gent. This monument was donated by the former employees of the factory.

Suiker Silo
19 October 1899: 173 land builders in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen settled the first Dutch cooperation beet sugar factory at Sas van Gent. This cooperation became later Suikerunie (Sugar Union). In 1990 the sugar factory closed. The sugar silo reminds the factory which was active for almost 91 years.

Vyfhoeck
This building has been built in 1650 by Alexander Feris. The building was used from 1680 up to 1750 as a brewery. In the wall of the Vyfhoeck there is a memorial brick of the situation of Sas van gent in 1633, "the Vyfhoeck". (five corners)
